In other words, you're probably capable of thinking for yourself.

And here's Fact Four: There will always be a market for people who can do that.

In every generation there's a strong tendency for everyone to think like everyone else. But your generation has an especially bad case, because your mass conformism is masked by the appearance of mass nonconformism. It's a point I learned from my West Point intern, when I asked her what it was like to lead such a uniformed existence.

Her answer stayed with me: Wearing a uniform, she said, helped her figure out what it was that really distinguished her as an individual.

Now she's a second lieutenant, leading a life of meaning and honor, figuring out how to Think Different for the sake of a cause that counts. Not many of you will be able to follow in her precise footsteps, nor do you need to do so. But if you can just manage to tone down your egos, shape up your minds, and think unfashionable thoughts, you just might be able to do something worthy with your lives. And even get a job.   다시 말해 어떤 게 자신을 위해 최선인지를 아는 것이다. 이것이 네번째 사실로 이어진다. 이런 사람은 언제든 필요로 하는 곳이 있다는 것이다.

세대를 막론하고 사람들은 다른 사람처럼 생각하려는 경향이 있다. 하지만 여러분 세대는 특히 더 심하다. ‘집단 동조 심리’가 ‘집단 비(非)동조 심리’로 위장하고 있기 때문이다. 앞서 언급한 웨스트포인트 인턴에게 제복을 입고 살아간다는 게 어떤 건지 물었을 때 깨달은 사실이기도 하다.

나는 그녀의 대답을 잊을 수가 없다. 남들과 같은 제복을 입음으로써, 자신을 다른 사람과 진정으로 구분짓는 게 무엇인지 아는 데 도움이 된다는 것이었다.

그녀는 현재 소위가 되어 의미있고 영예로운 삶을 살고 있다. 중요한 명분을 위해 어떻게 ‘다르게 생각할 지’ 고민하면서 말이다. 여러분 중 다수는 그녀가 걸어간 발자취를 따라가지 않을 것이며 그래야 할 필요도 없다. 하지만 여러분이 자아도취에서 벗어나, 정신을 가다듬고, 남들과 다른 생각을 한다면 삶에서 뭔가 가치있는 일을 할 수 있을지도 모른다. 혹시 아는가. 일자리도 구하게 될지. 행운을 빈다!
